UNCG currently does not license any of the newer Banner related applications
that make use of the new RIA technologies. Especially with the tight budget
environment we're in now, we want to look ahead and determine what
products/costs we need to be planning for and be positioned to do some R&D
development and product support/development once the standard Banner apps
we have now start crossing over to these new RIA technologies. The Banner
8.1 Architecture Guide mentions a Flex Builder 2 plug-in for Eclipse and Adobe
LiveCycle Data Services 2.x.

For any school that has established a development environment for this new
architecture, would you share your experience? I see there are Standard and
Professional versions of Flex Builder 3. I also see the Flex SDK is available as
open source. Does Adobe provide discounted licensing for Educational
institutions? Are the only products required to purchase the ones I mention
above (Flex Builder 2 plug-in and Adobe LiveCycle Data Services 2.x.) ?

I would appreciate any sagely advice anyone might have related to this.

Good morning, Craig:

These are good questions. I do understand you point about the higher education budgets. There are a lot of Colleges and Universities feeling the pain, financially, and investments in new technologies are under a microscope. In regards to the positioning for the new RIA roll out of the future versions of the Banner with Flex, now is the time to start thinking about a plan as we are here at Wayne State University. Rather than waiting for the test environment to be setup, I decided to begin a series of "Brown-Bag," sessions what is Adobe Flex 3, and how to begin development within this Framework.

With that being said, I would bypass the eclipse plug-in for Flex and download Flex Builder 3 IDE from the adobe website and obtain the free educational license for Adobe. From there, I would start with the "Learn Flex In A Week" tutorial on the Adobe website. The Flex SDK is bundled with the IDE. In regards to LiveCycle, I sent an email to the folk at Adobe to address the issue of a "Trial License," for this product. I hope to hear something soon. In the meantime, try researching BlazeDS open source product to use for now.

I hope that helps.
