A friend of mine has been given the task by his professor to develop a tool that will be used by a high school teacher to evaluate students performance.
It being a tool I advised him to use Java Swings and MySQL. There might be some reporting too. May be JFreeChart will be useful.

Your ideas will be very helpful for a solid start.

PS: It will be a small app and with 5-10 users.
Making functional requirements and designing the app will be done by developer. Any inputs on that will be help as well.

Thank you,
-Himalay

Ideas for what? I can't quite determine from your post what it is you're asking us to help you with.

Not exactly Ideas..but just wanted to make sure if the Java related things (Java Swings, JFreeChart) I mentioned are appropriate and enough for this tool, or if there are better alternatives in Java.
I have not build desktop application and worked in Swings either. So not sure how much compatible is it with mySql database and JFreeCharts.

This is going to be a simple tool, any rough estimate how much time an app like this might take?

Thanks of checking in Ulf

That's impossible to say, since we have hardly any idea what that application is supposed to do.

Swing applications can use JFreeChart to create and display charts, and they can connect to MySQL databases, if that's what you're asking.

Again, that's impossible to say without knowing in detail what the app should do.

The objective is to think from a teachers perspective and design and develop a simple tool that will help comparing students performance based on factors such as Grades, Attendance, Communication Skills Assignment Submission and also show a Statistical Analysis of Data in the form of reports. Nothing more than that.

From you answers, looks like using Swings, JFreeChart and MySql together would be enough.

And JFreeChart just does charts, if you want *reports* that's something else, like Jasper, perhaps.
