How is the Spring 3 Framework and the Adobe Flex 3 (Cairngorm Framework) work together?

When I was doing some research on Sungard's Banner ERP application and the use of the Flex Cairngorm framework, I saw the use of Flex, Hibernate, and Spring. Flex would set above the Spring level. I think I understand why, because of back-end database access, yet I thought that Hibernate was the Model (MVC) provider to the real world (View). So . . . what is Spring doing within the Cairngorm framework configuration again?

Flex is the view. Spring can be used to provide the services Flex consumes.
