I use Apache Commons codec Base64 encoding and decoding methods to fetch Intranet Domain login name only.
Is this considered an acceptable safe practice and/or is there any securty or any other issue with Base64 encoding and decoding?

Base64 has nothing to do with security. Base64 is an encoding, not an encryption.
