I heard this term recently. What are subscription applications for a mobile platform. Does this term fall under standard usage? Are there any examples of such a mobile application?

Thanks.

Terms like that tend to be fuzzy, but I'd take that to mean something like a Wall Street Journal app, where the application (some sort of reader program) subscribed to a data feed (the articles). There are a number of those floating around, some for public subscription, some for private (limited access, pay-to-play) subscription. A variation might be an intenet-based product ordering app.

I imagine, however, that you got a lot more answers, and probably much better ones from your parallel inquiry over on StackOverflow.

@Tim: thanks for your reply.

I heard this term from a friend and though I kind of guessed what it could possibly mean from its name, I just wanted to be sure. Probably, the next question to ask myself would be how to go about creating such applications. Assuming we have a service that a user can subscribe to- what needs to be done on the phone to facilitate creation, functioning and maintenance of such applications.

Basically, just any sort of GUI app that contacts a web server/web service would come under that heading. Things like a mobile news service, a knowledge base, real-time stock quotes.

Technically, you can do subscription-based using just the device's web browser, but I don't think that's what you're after. And not everything does best as a web page-based app anyway. Sometimes you get a better quality GUI from a native app.
