Hi All,

Involved in a project and Java isn't my thing so I would appreciate any help. Here are two webpages, both are same and the local and remote folders show no differences. One works; the other doesn't. After two days, for the life of me can't figure out why. Also posted is the error. Have contacted the maker but no reply. This is the last thing on the project and happens to be on the front page of site. It appears to be looking for something but I can't figure out what since both website folders are the same (no orphan files or folders on the working one). I will be at the desk and will give any further info required by any Guru's out there. I can't look at this code anymore; which might be part of the trouble (forest for the trees and all that).

angels_on_your_pillow2003 - WORKING

angelsonyourpillow.net - NOT WORKING

Error:

java.lang.NullPointerException
at CreditRoll.init(CreditRoll.java)
at sun.plugin2.applet.Plugin2Manager$AppletExecutionRunnable.run(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)
Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException

Thanks in Advance for Your Help,
Stan

I opened both of those sites and then looked in my Java cache directory to see what applets were downloaded.

They are both called CreditRoll.class, but their contents are different. One says it was written in 1996 and the other says it was written in 2001, at least dates like that appear inside the applet near the beginning.

So my advice would be to copy the CreditRoll.class file from the working site to the not-working site. First rename the not-working CreditRoll.class to something else so you don't lose it, just in case it does actually work but needs some different configuration. See if that fixes the problem. It might fix it but there might be something else wrong instead.

Hi Paul,

That is a GREAT suggestion. Here's the problem. I am re-putting together a website for a lady. The angels2003 site is was on GeoCities before they closed. Believe it or not that site is still showing long after GeoCities is gone. A few months ago (before they closed) I contacted the owner informing her that a porn site had taken over a link that was supposed to be a link to somewhere else. I just happened to find it and being as she was obviously quite religious I thought she should know. Her efforts to get hold of the lady, who had been doing her website and was in bad health, failed. She can't understand why but I believe the woman passed away. They had a very close online relationship and the lady just dropped off the face of the earth. Anyway about 4 months (recently) later she got hold of me out of the blue and asked if I could try to save her site. I had mentioned that I had done several websites in the past (quite a while; if this tells you anything CSS was just starting to be a draw). I told her I would try to help. I used a web extractor to down load it. Almost everything was there. One whole folder was gone and a few odds and ends. One of those was the CreditRoll.class Java file.

I have no idea why that scroll is still working and I cannot extract the CreditRoll.class file. I have tried 4 or 5 more times. Anyway I found the site of the guy who compiled it and I did download the new version. What you have come up with is something I would have never thought of. Which is the older file? the Angels 2003? Also one more thing if you don't mind. What kind of program can I use to open this sort of file to read without all the gobbledy-goop? Because of my own medical stuff I can't think enough to do any programming kinds of things anymore but it would be nice to have and website stuff would be a nice suppliment to our strapped income at this time.

As you can see by the icons you've made my day. I was about shot trying to figure this out.

Thanks,
Stan

You can find the latest version of that applet -as well as more information about it- at http://www.joerg-meissner.de/site/java/. It's probably better to work with a known version than with an unknown version that has been copied several times.

Thanks to you also Ulf for taking the time on my problem. I had 3 different copies downloaded from different places and I just went to the folders and found the 1997 one. Worked immediately. This is a great, friendly forum. Keep up the GREAT WORK, guys!!!

p.s: Love the whole western theme idea. Very ingenious. Pass this on if you know to whom the credit goes.
