Please advise me to crack SCJP and SCJD in 4 months
Hi All,

I am in urgent need of all your advices regarding cracking scjp and SCJD in 4 months.

I was asked by my employer to complete SCJP and SCJD tests by this july end. Even I have plans to do them as it will be useful for my career. I have worked on core java for one of my projects an year ago. So cracking SCJP should not be problem for me and I am planning to take it in May 1st week.
Is this OK?
Can I manage? How much time I need to spend every day? I can spend two hours every day currently.
Do you suggest me any resource to crack this test? I have head first java book, but never read it. Which material do you suggest me for this test?

And also SCJD contains 2 tests. So what's the latest date I can apply for SCJD test-1 after cracking SCJP in May-1st week.
How much preparation we need here? Based on this I need to schedule SCJD test-1.
Does June 2nd week seems Manageable? If yes, can we manage to write SCJD test-2 and results by July end or august-1st week? How much time do they take for evaluating SCJD test-1 and test-2? I am not aware of this time, so I need to plan based on this.

Thanks a lot for your patience for reading, please try to reply here...

I will suggest go step wise. Don't rush or come under pressure. First prepare thoroughly for SCJP. I think so till May you can
prepare if you give 2-3 hours everyday and try harder at the weekends. Remember ONE STEP AT A TIME.

Another thing for SCJP, the best book is K&B. Just finish and practice as much mock as you can. You will succeed.

Good luck mate.

HTH,
Thanks Prithvi. I am planning to prepare for SCJP only now and decided to read/practice these two books and then go for mock exams.

1) Head First Java
2) SCJP Sun Certified Programmer for Java 6 Study Guide by Katherine Sierra and Bert Bates (K&B)

I have not read Head First Java book before, but have gone through Java Complete Reference book. So will it make sense to read Head First Java now than Complete reference?

I heard Head First Java is a very very good book. So I thought to read it any how as it will be useful for future interviews also. Am I wrong here?

Thank you
Yes,

HFJ is very good for beginners. You start by that, finish it and then switch to K&B. But if you really understand the constructs, you can even
start from K&B book directly but i will suggest you to go through HFJ first.

Yes practicing a lot of mocks will surely help you. You get some confusion, post your question here and you will get someone answer to your
question.

Best of luck for your preparation,

I am compiling notes for K&B as well, will put it over my signature link pretty soon. It will be very helpful
i suppose. All key points from all chapters.

Good luck,

Yes, Head First Java is a very good book but if you have too little time then read only the parts that are SCJP exam topics.

There is such a thing as a Half Life of Knowledge so spending about a month or two to prepare for an exam is about right. Any more than that, the small details you studied in the beginning will be forgotten.

Also, a lot of JavaRanch members like ExamLab, a free, downloadable mock exam simulator. (Although I suggest donating them some money after you pass the SCJP exam. Perhaps $1 US per 1 correct answer you give on your exam.)
Thanks once agaain Prithvi and Larry ...
