you should ask this question to yourself

I would say SCJP preparation helps you to learn
Java in a more detailed way! And definitely it will add more value to your cv when you start your career. In some job requirements SCJP is becoming a "required" thing rather than "optional" or "nice to have"! It doesnt mean that you will become a great programmer just by passing SCJP. I am an experienced professional
J2EE programmer, but I learned a lot of stuff while preparing for SCJP. This transforms a good programmer to a better programmer. I am sure that I would never bother to learn all these subtle things in real life projects. With an
IDE and google, you don't need to worry whether my code gives a compile error or throw an exception at runtime or whethere this method returns a SortedSet<E> or does it returns a NavigableSet<E> or how many objectes are eligible for Garbage Collection after running line #19 and things like that. But SCJP preparation cleared a lot of basics and I learned a lot of new things and I am glad that I started it

Dont go for it just for the sake of certificate. Use this time to learn and understand the Java concepts and use SCJP as a stepping stone to other Java / professional certifcations. Good luck!
