Hi again.
I have an application which is started from the commandline. After having started it, the application is in "interactive" mode and you can enter different commands in the terminal to controle it and do things and get outputs. Is there a way to create streams for the output and input for such an external non-java application so that i can use the functionality of the app inside my own Java program ?

Sounds as though you need a Process (which is too difficult for "beginning" so I shall move this thread). Look for the ProcessBuilder class, and more important, Google for Michael Daconta when Runtime.exec() won't and be sure to read that paper.

You're welcome Glad you found that helpful; the Michael Daconta article is an essential resource.
