Hi folks,

I'm doing my essay exam on Friday for SCJD. What can I expect from this? From what I've heard it is a case of answering questions about the choices you made (a second choices.txt?). Am I correct in this assumption? Is there anything I can / should do to prepare?

Many thanks,

John

Well, yes. You'll be asked things, like, what did you use, RMI or Sockets, and why you took such approach... there are 4 generic questions. I myself don't think it is necessary to read the choices.txt file, but your entire solution has to be in your head, for instance, how your locking mechanism works and how you deal with the transactions... another good tip is to give names of classes there, because the idea is to show them that you are really the person that coded everything.

But no need to worry, champion. The solution is still fresh in your head, so it shouldn't be a problem to you. It should be easy.

Good luck, champion!

Hi John,

If you coded your assignment, no need to worry, it will be easier than a walk through the park on a sunny day Just 4 questions (2 big ones and 2 smaller ones) to validate that you are the one that coded the assignment and not your best friend who is a real Java Guru. And if you use a bit of common sense (and think about the major parts/decisions of the assignment) you'll know what these questions will be.

Kind regards,
Roel

Thanks guys,

that's quite re-assuring. I can imagine what the questions could be given the decisions I made as I went about implementing a solution.

If the weather in Edinburgh holds up it might well be that ;)

Many thanks,

John

How did the exam go? Not too daunting except the price...?

Hi,

the exam went quite well thanks. There were four questions, each of which asked me something about which I'd already invested significant time and effort into during the design and implementation of the assignment. I would say the exam is straightforward but not easy. I feel it is best to have prepared for it, such as re-reading your choices.txt and taking on some practice questions were a great help to me.

Now just to badger Oracle to allow me to upload my assignment.

Many thanks,

John

Well, as an Information Technology graduate, I have already took that exam last year. The objective of this essay exam is to briefly justify your choices in terms of the comparison of design and implementation objectives with the advantages and disadvantages of each. Good luck to your exam!
