I'm no quite sure i'm folloing your question but:



Is defined when you want to search for a specific single property.

Where as



Takes more than one parameter (as an array of Object)

As for performance I guess it has more to do with what indexes you have defined and/or if you are doing Lazy or Eager Fetches. Hibernate can be quite a handful but is extremely useful as well... but not for the faint of heart.
