sending zipped xml content over the nertwork

In my application, I get xml content from the server and throw on to the browser so that I get a word document. It's working fine. If the xml content is too large and the net work is slow, it's giving problems. So Could anybody suggest a way to zip the contents on the server side and then send it to the client so that it would open in the browser as a word application. Thanks in advance,
