Looking for a way to Go throught a source code with paper and pencil  RSS feed

For the learning process and understanding code it's handy to have a way to go throught the source code,
keep track of the instance variables and eventually know what value is returned.
Of course I could use a compiler, but then I will rely on it too much.

But I don't know a way to do this efficiently. Does anyone know how I get past the code without writing
too much on paper?

Well, personally, I used to take a printout and colored pens and mark up things like loops, changes in variable values, returns from a method, etc.

Of course, settling on a set of conventions for code indentation - such as having matching braces at the same level - helps immensely.
