My web site has many different files like text, excel, pdf...etc in different sections. May i know what is the the easiest way to track the files or type of file( text, excel, pdf) those are not used by customers at all.

implementation of Servelet filters for the whole website?

I'd use the server's access logs rather than putting something into the web app itself.

using server logs we have to physically count the file names. in other words, a text file has 100 hits and a pdf has 200 hits in a day. you want me count 300 files a day and find out which file has max/min number of hits.

You're joking, right?

If you need finer-grained information than can be garnered from the URLs then you may have to instrument the application. My point, is that you should not burden the app with such mechanisms unless you absolutely have to.
