Meta is a greek prefix that means ( among other meanings) "more than"

So a metacharacter is more than a simple stupid character (that's perhaps why you find the term wildchar sometimes)

There's a basic philosophy behind the "meta" prefix.

That meta-character is used not only to represent what it is (i.e. a character) but something more.

You encounter many of these metacharacters in regular expressions for example, but actually everywhere in your life:

Take $ for example. That "sign" is not only the sign $ itself but in regular expression world represents the "end of a String" just as in the economy world a currency (dollar)
