My sister has said "My sister is a programmer all i need to do is buy a barcode reader, she can write my stock control software".
now you know everything i know about usb input.
so i am after votes for pre-existing APIs to investigate (or is jusb the defacto standard),
And any gotchas to look out for.

Smack your sister. Seriously. Volunteering you without asking, assuming you can do something just because you are a programmer. Don't say a word, she also asks you every time her Windows freezes or crashes?

A few years back when I was dabbling with barcode readers most of them had serial connections, not USB. The RXTX API was used to communicate with them (http://www.rxtx.org/). If it really is USB, then the JavaIoFaq has some links to relevant libraries and articles.

+1 on the smacking.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
