OK, so then hashing is creating a 'simplified' version of a piece of data which is not guaranteed to be unique.
In the image you gave, all data that is hashed would be placed in one of 16 buckets.
If you started to get too many items in a single bucket (collision) then you can resize to (Say) 64 buckets but would then need to move all of the existing items into the new bucket arrangement - ie everything would need to be rehashed.
