Can't seem to get any Sitemesh decorator patterns to work except for the /*

We have a sample Spring+Sitemesh app. It does little to nothing. The decorators.xml file is
<decorators defaultdir="/decorator"> <!--Map decorators to request based on specific criteria.--> <decorator name="default" page="decorator.jsp"> <pattern>/*</pattern> </decorator> <!-- The pages will not be decorated. --> <excludes> <pattern>/somePage.jsp</pattern> <pattern>some/*.jsp</pattern> </excludes> </decorators>
This seems to be ok - the pages I display are suitably decorated.

I am experimenting, however, and would like to specify a more specific patten in the decorator that only works for 'message.' I can't get it to work - the application displays the
without decorating it.
Any pointers would be appreciated.
