Hi,
I want to create a module that will handle the credit card payment for my website. I found that there are a lot many products in the market doing this thing, but being a java developer, I want to write the code myself.
Can anybody please give me some hints on how to start and what to read.
Any kind of advice will be very helpful.

What help are you looking for? You need to sign up with a payment processing company, and they'll provide you with information about example code, test accounts etc. There is no standard API that you can use that will work with all payment processors.

Thanks for taking a look.
I see there are few payment processing companies for this.

What I assumed was, the banks would be having some webservices opened, which these companies might be invoking for the transactions.
I was wondering if I can directly call those services from my code. Just to get rid of a third party in the middle tier.

Could you please help me clear my understanding about how this stuff works?

If you have an account with a bank then you can usually make transfers electronically, but that's quite different from payment processing. I don't think there's a way around signing up with one of those companies.
