Hi All,

Ive recently achieved SCJP 6 and now Im aiming for the SCJD 5 exam. I work mainly as a C# developer but im interested in Java as well. Any advice as to how to start preparation? Ive ordered two books namely: SCJD Exam with J2SE 5, Second Edition (Expert's Voice in Java) and Head First Design Patterns. Is this a good way to start?

Howdy, Olu. Congrats for the SCJP and welcome to JavaRanch!

Well champ, I think it is a good start. How about your experience with OO? Do you feel comfortable developing OO applications? You'll also have to learn RMI/Sockets, multi-threading and Swing... but you'll just have to worry about them in the near future.

Thanks Bernard and Robert for your prompt welcome messages and encouragement. @Bernard responses from you and Robert have definitely boosted my confidence.

@Robert My OO knowledge is sound. Actually, it's because of my knowledge of Java that I got a job as a C# Developer. I did a lot of Java programming during my uni days and for six months commercially before taking on a C# role. My knowledge of Swing is good, well familiar with layout managers, have always coded my GUI using an editor. I have some knowledge of multithreading and sockets too acquired from my final project at uni - it was a network based app. I made use of sockets and used multithreading to handle multiple client requests to my server side app (i.e. a multithreaded server). I don't know much about RMI. Having said all that, it seems Im still gonna need to raise my knowledge of these concepts a few notches up as the real world is very different from university as I have learnt. Moreover, from what Ive read, the exam objectives seem to delve deep into those topics.

So how long did it take you guys to achieve SCJD certification? Do you think I should download the exam and work on it in paralleln with the Andrew Monkhouse book and design patterns book? Or should I go through these books first to get a feel of what's involved and then fdownload the exam?

Thanks
