Marilyn ,
The code format problems seem to be something to do with my internet provider (AOL).I have sent code to another AOL user and the format seems to be ok ,ie the indentation is not affected.I do write the code with indentation included using spaces but it seems to be lost in delivery.Would it be ok if I just sent it as a notepad attachment with my email , or perhaps someone has an idea of what I am doing wrong on the provider front.
thanks

Howdy Daniel,

Those early bumps can sure be frustrating! Unfortunately, attachments are not allowed.

You're using spaces, so that's OK. Like you said, sounds like it's on the email side of things.

What email program are you using? Is there a preference or setting where you can choose between html and plain text mail?

Anyone out there using notepad and AOL?

Hang in there!

Although I don't use AOL, I had a similar problem last month that was fixed by switching from html to text in my outlook sending preferences. It was on a Friday, and I thought my nitpicker was pulling my leg at first as it looked fine on my end.

Hello Tom and Pauline,
Thanks for the input. It is AOL that I am using, I had set the format to plain text when sending the second attempt, unfortunately that didn`t work . I have found an editor within AOL`s email that set`s text to original text and uses an option for indentation "Quote Style" whatever that does I am unsure. When sending the email`s it makes my spacing look eratic as well(Except for the genuine mistakes ) .Hopefully that has worked. But, hey it`s all in a days buckarooing , lasooing , unfortunately I`m trying to lasoo a my pet kitten at the minute .

Lassoing a kitten? Let me know how that works out! I've got 2 cats at the moment, and I couldn't either of them when they were kittens!
As far as your e-mail thing goes, I always just pasted my code into the body of the message directly from my e-mail program, which is Outlook Express. Never had any problems that I can recall, but then I've never used AOL.

Hi carol
Ah! OutLook Express ! I used to use that when I was tied to MSN it was great never had any problems . Then I changed to broadband and AOL because of the freebies that came along with it ( I can now see why they have to give things free with it) I tried to change my email preferences so that outlook was my default(which AOL say you can do ) by using IMAP instead of POP3.Four hours later I helped my cat deliver the kittens hence the lasoing problems.Don`t know whether my next trick will work have tried pasting the notepad file as a .txt file rather than a .java file whether this makes any difference I don`t know.

I've never used AOL. I was kinda hoping that someone here might have gone through this (with AOL). I've had students that have used all different kinds of email clients, Outlook, OutlookExpress, Netscape, Mozilla, Thunderbird, Yahoo (one of the best in my opinion), hotmail, etc.

I guess if we can't figure out the AOL stuff, you might have to change to one of the other email clients (or create one just for these assignments if you choose Yahoo for example).

A quick google search came up with this page that explains how to send plain text email from a bunch of different email programs. It lists a bunch of AOL versions.

That said, it looks like it would be simpler to set up a free web account, like Yahoo. (I've been really happy with Yahoo. )
