I hope this question is not too daft. Does setting the initial heap size affect startup time? I am using Windows 7,
Java
6 Update 20, and my program startup is very quick nevertheless. Cutting that 1 second in half would be even better.

I have also read that Java 7 will feature increased overall speed and even better performance, although Java 6 peforms very well.
