Today at the TeX User's Group 2010 conference in San Francisco, Don Knuth is delivering a speech entitled "An Earthshaking Announcement" . What do y'all think it's going to be?

Knuth will announce that string theory reveals that binary trees really have 11 branches on each node.

If it's an earthshaking announcement, and it's being given at a TeX users group conference, then surely it must be off-topic.

On the other hand when you get to be old emeritus, you're entitled to do barmy things.

It is going to be the fact you only need to reach 85 MPH in order for the flux capacitor to enable time travel. Also, it only requires 1.19 "jigawatts".

He's converted to Scientology and Mathematics were made up by Thetan's trillions of years ago so that we would have something to do. When in reality mathematics are useless.

I don't know if over the time Doc has improved the car otherwise it is 88 MPH and 1.21 GWatts. ;-)

(Only couple days before I watched the BTTF triology)

That's why it's an Earth-shattering announcement. Knuth has improved on the original car.

It's probably as Earthshaking as anything at a TeX conference is likely to be.

Maybe in the context of a TeX user group it is. IMO it's anyway only certain niches that still have a need for (or are accustomed to) the TeX ecosystem, everyone else is well served by standard word processors and layout/design apps.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
