I've used Ext by means of Ext GWT but I haven't worked with jQuery by itself. Is jQuery a competitor or companion to Ext? Also, does jQuery offer any advanced GUI controls like those found in Ext?

jQuery could be viewed as either a competitor or companion. One of the nice things about jQuery is that it is very non-invasive, and gets an A on "works and plays well with others".

Widgets are provided by jQuery UI. The widget set in UI is pretty small at present, unless you count plugins, in which case the sky is rather the limit.
