openjpa, annotations and entity names

i have my entity as this:

@Entity(name = "Groups")
@Table(name = "groups", catalog = "lcw")
public class Group implements Serializable, IBean {

and my persistance.xml

<class>com.xxx.lcw.jpa.Group</class>

now the bean is in a seperate package from the main webpage and persistence.xml
if i build a jar of the bean package and include it i WebContent/WEB-INF/lib everything works fine

but if i use the build path and the "Java EE Module Dependencies" to include the bean package i get this error message:

  An error occurred while parsing the query filter "select model from Groups model order by model.id". 
Error message: The name "Groups" is not a recognized entity or identifier. Perhaps you meant Group, which is a close match. 
Known entity names: [Eventtime, Speaker, GroupEvent,  Group]

why is it reverting to reflection and ignoring my annotations?

i found the trouble was the project my beans were in was "byte enhanced" why should that cause a problem?
