As JInternalFrame doesn't inherit from Window, which has the setUndecorated(boolean) method, I asume that it is not possible to undecorate internal frames.

Or just use a JPanel with an appropriate border. Remember that JDesktopPane has a null layout, so you will need to compute and specify appropriate bounds for the panel.
