I am trying to set up a workspace for an older application. The instructions tell me to download a specific version of the JDK. Is that the same thing as and SDK, because that is all I can find.

Yes. Did you find the old edition?

Why are you using an old version? If you run it on another computer with a newer version, it will run. You may have problems with boxing and unboxing which were introduced in 2004. If you find the javac tool documentation, you will see you can compile with a particular type of source code and target version in mind. Look for the -source and -target options.
