Contemplating purchasing the whizlabs exam simulator, is it worth it?

I'm working my way through the SCJP book (K&B), and also head first Java.

The CD from the SCJP book isn't particularly user friendly, and I can't focus on particular areas, the whizlabs exam simulator seems to do just that.

I'm thinking of purchasing it out of my own pocket, can anyone give me an unbiased opinion whether its worth it or not? Of course the reviews on their site are all biased, I just want to know from real people if its good before I shell out $50

Thanks

If you hesitate to buy it, why don't you try some of the free stuff first. Some can be found in the FAQ/Mock Exams

Hi James,

I used Whizlabs when I was preparing for the SCJP.

Whilst the exams provided by K&B are good, I really
needed more material to test my knowledge. I can't
remember why I chose Whizlabs instead of Enthuware,
these were the two products I was looking at.

Whizlabs provides a number of mock exams and gives
you the possibility to exercise specific topics as well.

The questions range from easy, if you can call them
like that, to tough and of course there are time limits.

The most reassuring part during the preparation is that
the answers and the explanations are correct, detailed,
they contain references to literature and they explain things
differently than K&B which can be useful sometimes.

The most reassuring part during the exam is that Whizlabs
seemed a bit tougher

I was not reassured with the free exams on the internet,
because of the lack of quality of many of them, but one
exception to the rule was Certified Java Programmer Mock Exam
its SCJP 1.4, but top quality.

Good luck,

Gian

p.s. I remember now that I opted for Enthuware for the SCWCD
exam.

Thanks for the replies, thanks Gian.

I ended up just buying it in the end, there was a 10% discount coupon aswel so that was nice ;)

What are the limitations on the software, can I run the tests an unlimited number of times? or is there a time limit before my account expires?

Hi James,

You are welcome.

As far as I know there are no limitations except that you
are limited to one machine. Unless they stepped off this
policy. The limitation is really 'physical' so it is not possible
to install the software on another machine with the same
activation key...

Good luck with the preparations,

Gian

i would highly recommend enthuware.... gave me an amazing tune up. Got it in the last 4 days. While all i got was 50% in the first few tests, i ended up getting 91% in the end. and its just 17$ for students. That is dirt cheap..... I am thinking, its the amount i would otherwise spend on dinner somewhere. Rather have something for my career.....

i would say if you can afford it, go for it. it will never be a waste. You would however regret later on if you werent prepared enough.

The book (its the best and the most important material) is incomplete when it comes to practise. You need practise tests to find out where you lag behind. instead of repeatedly reading the book, this significantly your preparation time

Although I have not taken the real exam yet, I would highly recommend Enthuware. The biggest proof for me has been watching my mock test scores rise and rise. And, not just the Enthuware mock exams, but every mock exam I can find.
