According to smart programmers, one good way to learn to improve programming skill is to peruse source code and play around with it so that it may be understood thoroughly. Are there any Java programs out there that would serve as good examples of wise use of OOP concepts? Something between a toy and a 'real world' project, perhaps?

Hi Peter, Welcome to the Ranch!

Your best bet is probably to start something yourself, then it'll go by your rules and at your pace

Do you have an IDE setup? like Eclipse/Netbeans/intelliJ?

Get a book called "Head First Java", there are lots of sample snippets in there. Work through that, type out some source code, then expand on it and experiment.

Some generic ideas to start with :

Create a calendar application, using Swing
Create a payslip application, that takes your Gross salaray and calculates deductions etc
Create a mileage application that takes your car mileage/petrol costs etc and produces some stats
Create a small game, like Guess-the-number / Higher-lower

You can use these examples to create Objects/entities, you should be able to use nearly everything from the head first java book such as exceptions/assertions and so on

Any specific questions you have, post them up on the Ranch (but be sure to include some source code!)
