Properties vs Environment Variables (Understood)  RSS feed

The link above to Sun's Java Doc explains a property object as "configuration tool while designing applications". That is to quote "an application capable of downloading files might use a property named "download.lastDirectory" to keep track of the directory used for the last download." Here the map "download.lastDirectory" serves as a configuration tool for some application.


The link above explains an environment variable as something the OS maintains to pass info to the instance of the invoked application.

The only question i have in mind is if i can create my own ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES, how are the two different concepts different in terms of usability?
