I am using ubuntu 10.04. And i Has been asked to create an applet which is used to install a driver if it is not available. It is a system driver not a browser plug-in. And i decided to install it through java.lang.Runtime.exec() method. The problem is the ubuntu will prompt for password when we start installation. So please tell me how can we suppress the prompting for password. Thankyou.

Probably more of a Ubuntu question.

Maybe you could somehow try to run your applet (or just exec(), though I don't think it's possible) as administrator.

Normally you cannot install drivers in Ubuntu without having administrator privileges. It would be a huge security risk if a normal user could install drivers in the system. On a well-secured system, there's no way that you should be able to install a system driver like that without getting a warning and being asked for the administrator password.

(By the way, the whole idea of an applet installing a system driver sounds like a strange requirement to me...).

(Please read your private messages for an administrative JavaRanch matter).

You'd need to search for the specifics, but there is a URL form that allows you to specify an apt package. If you did this then they would be able to click the link and install the package. I have made about 100 assumptions here of course.
