Ubuntu 10.0 Maverick Meerkat

Ubuntu 10.10 is out.
10.04 Lucid Lynx was touted as a LTS. What does exactly LTS mean? Ubuntu would keep on providing fixes for it for a longer period of time?
Anbody updated to 10.10?

Correct. Here is the LTS schedule. I'm still running the previous LTS, 8.04, on my home server (10.04 doesn't like that hardware).
10.04 is running great on my laptop, so I'll probably look at testing 10.10 in a few weeks once all the "early adopters" have solved the teething issues.

I have the Live CD ISO downloaded and will try it on my laptop this week (running the Live CD only - I got bit by 9.10 last year when it didn't like my laptop so this time I'm going to make sure that it sees my video card and wifi card, offers to load proprietary drivers, and I will verify that the sound works correctly.) At some point I will also upgrade my various 10.04 VMs (or just create new VMs).

I plan on upgrading from 10.04 this weekend.

Just now installed in a new VM. I'm a little concerned about the very first update being a new kernel, and labelled as an important security update too. Perhaps they were too hasty in trying to get this thing out on 10/10/10.

I did run the Desktop Live CD on my laptop - it found the necessary drivers and sound is working fine. I will try an upgrade there and see how it goes, perhaps this weekend or early next week.

Ran the Live CD.
Frankly speaking looks the same as 10.04 nor could I find any new features. I am wondering if I should really upgrade.

I am still a bit confused over my original question. If 10.04 was LTS how come 10.10 is released. I am not sure I understand Ubuntu's philosophy here.

I'm still trying to fix my system after upgrading from 10.04 to 10.10. After a reboot I was not able to login. No login-screen, no text-console. After two long nights of swearing and cursing I was able to fix that problem (a combination of several problems like screwed up xorg.conf, missing drivers, incomplete dependencies, etc.). Now I'm still trying to get my network connection to work. (Obviously I'm sitting at another machine at the moment).
I've talked today with a colleague who tried to make a fresh installation and he was also encountering only problems.

From a marketing point of view it's a nice thing to release version 10.10 on the 10/10/10. But what they've delivered is far away from being ready for prime-time. I would advise to wait at least a few more weeks before giving Ubuntu 10.10 a try. (At least if you are planing to use it as a production environment and not as a playground).

All in all very disappointing. Especially because any other upgrade I made till now was flawlessly.

One of the planks in Ubuntu's philosophy is to have a predictable release schedule. Every 6 months, rain or shine. Other Linux distributions are less predictable and often hinge on introducing large, incompatible dependencies (hey, a new version of Xorg!) or the whim of the maintainer(s) (hey, I have to bury some bodies!).
The LTS is notable because it gives relief from this hectic schedule, being released every 2 years and supported for 3 years on the desktop, 5 years on the server.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll wait a bit then.

My laptop is now running Ubuntu 10.10 (actually, dual booting with Win7).

As usual, I tried to do an upgrade (from 10.04) from the package manager. Worst failure yet. For those of you keeping track at home, this is a 100% failure rate on the upgrade (my first install was 7.10). I always try the upgrade because upgrading takes little time on my part (a minute or so to click on a few buttons after which I leave the system to do its thing while I go on with life), and if it should ever surprise me and actually work, it would save me several hours of doing a clean install and reconfigure and app reinstall. Anyway, prior upgrades typically had sound issues. This time the sound appeared to be OK (at least the login sound was clear) but about a minute after logging in the system froze. Actually, I think just Gnome froze because ALT-Fn successfully switched to the other terminals where I could log in and do whatever. Except shutdown - that hung also.

So I wiped it and did a clean install. Things went OK until I tried to install the hardware driver for the wifi card. Doing this work flawlessly from the Live CD, but on the installed version gave a weird error, and the install failed. Googling led me to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1369975 (a post from 1-1/2 years ago) that lead to the conclusion. It always amazes me on how long ago certain issues have been reported and yet they remain unfixed. And what did people do before google search? But I digress. Uninstalling the bcmwl-* drivers allowed me to successfully install the wifi hardware driver.

So at this point life is good. I have most of the stuff that I use reinstalled, though I still have a few config tweaks to make. The only noticeable difference so far is that I have Firefox 3.6.10 (I think that 10.04 have 3.5, but I'd have to fire up one of my 10.04 VMs to verify that).

I'm definitely going to wait I don't want to waste time resinstalling/reconfiguring everything again.

Last Saturday Ubuntu downloaded and installed updates. It wanted to reboot but I didn't let it until I shut down for the night (well, I did reboot into Win7 to do some file synchronization with my desktop). On Sunday when I booted I didn't have my wifi. I reinstalled the wifi hardware driver to no avail. So there is no joy at this time with "Mischievous" Meerkat.

However, I noticed when booting into Win7 that it also had issues with wifi and I had to jiggle the wifi on/off switch to get it to connect to wifi (I tried the same jiggling under Ubuntu, no luck). So the issue could be hardware related. When I have time I will carve out 5GB of disk space and install Ubuntu 10.04, which worked flawlessly, and see if it can connect to wifi. If it cannot, I will know that I have a hardware issue.

I've installed it on my PC. I am facing some issues about graphics. I've tested it on few other machines with different copies of Mavrick, but result is same.
There are some good enhancements. like, Ubuntu Software center is made much user friendly than the previous releases. Also package installer now waits for other process to release the lock on dpkg. That helps you to start multiple installations at the same time and go to enjoy your coffee.
No change in OpenOffice.org Although firefox 3.6.11 is a good enhancement, i would still for for Google Chrome 7.0.51, which is considerably faster than other browsers.
Upgrade from Lucid is giving some errors but fresh installation of Mavric is working fine.
My rating: 7/10 (would be better if you wait for stable release)

From reading this thread it would seem that 10.10 was not ready for release BUT I have upgraded two machines from 10.04 to 10.10 without any significant problems and have done a clean 10.10 install with no problems. My main complaint with the upgrades is that one can't leave them going unattended since they ask questions about changes to configuration files such as those associated with Samba. My main complaint about the clean install was the number of updated packages I needed just one day after the release.

In my view Ubuntu is still the Linux of choice.

Ubuntu 10.10 is working great on my system along with Win7.

I installed it a month back. Whoever is trying out 10.10, I advise them to go online at least thrice a week. They are providing security updates every often.

I tried upgrading a VM to 10.10 and it stuck me with a widescreen video aspect ratio on a 4:3 monitor. I screwed with it for an hour or so before reverting to 10.04. Thank VMWare for snapshots!

I upgraded to 10.10 yesterday. I waited a month or so, just to let things settle down. The upgrade went smoothly, and I've got zero complaints.

In my continuing saga with Ubuntu 10.10, I have now reverted to 10.04 on my laptop. The wifi drivers in 10.04 seem to handle my flaky wifi nic in the laptop, though I do have to jiggle the wifi switch (at which point the light goes from amber (no wifi) to blue (wifi available), and then i have to go into "Connect to Hidden wireless network" and type in the network name. But at least I have wifi back. The laptop is 3 years old this month so I suspect that in the course of the next year various things will start failing. Time to save up pennies for a new laptop.

I have upgraded to 10.10 on all of my VMs, though.

I did a clean install. Looks nice. I got two users.
1) If user A logs in first, the network manager applet is not visible for user B.
2) Some random times, there is no sound. It is not a driver issue or anything. Most of the times, sound works perfectly
3) If some disk i/o operation is in progress (I was copying the data from the backup external HDD onto the laptop) Ubuntu noticeably slows down for other operations. ( I was trying to launch Mahjong during this copy operation)
See ya later boys, I think I'm in love. Oh wait, she's just a tiny ad:
