Applet not loading until clicked

We are having a problem with our applets taking a very very long time to load or sometimes never loading until you click on the loading screen of the applet (which attempts to open in another browser window). The user sees the Sun logo and its circular progress bar spinning and spinning. It might eventually load, but it takes a very very long time if it does. More often though, we have to click on the load click and it will immediately load (as well as pop up another browser window which we just close). It is not a problem that occurs all of the time, but it is happening quite frequently. It does not seem to matter that size of the jar files that are being loaded as this happens with both large and small applets. It is not a network issues as we are running on a LAN. Our testing is most frequently done on the same machine that the webserver resides and the problem still exists. Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated.
