Perhaps you can elaborate? What is increasing? The number of people with SCJPs? The number of jobs requiring SCJPs?

I am sure it is not increasing. I personally feel it does not hold much weight. Real work experience is much more desired & sought after.

Here are some facts

1. Some employers prefer a candidate that has passed the SCJP. I know of none that would turn down a candidate because they passed the exam.
2. Earning the SCJP will only increase your chances in an interview since your fundamental concepts are strong.
3. Real work experience is a plus and will often eclipse a certificate. But a certificate cannot do you harm.

Now whether you want to take the exam, comes down to your decision.

Agree++

The end goal should not be the SCJP. The goal should be to improve the skills, and the SCJP is just an incentive to do so. It is amazing how often I interview someone, who has a SCJP, and it is obvious that he/she crammed for the test, had never used Java after the test, and clearly has forgotten everything. IMHO, if the SCJP is just a checklist item, with no further intention of improving the skills, then you might as well not get the cert.

Agree ++.

Certification can't hurt.

-- It helps you learn the fundamentals.
-- It shows that you are serious about your chosen vocation.
-- It shows that you are prepared to learn, etc

You won't be hired just because you are certified. You will have to do well in your interviews. You will have to convince your prospective employer that you know how to apply what you had learnt in your certification. If you are already confident with your fundamentals, then gaining some experience with the sought-after technologies/frameworks can be more beneficial.

The old adage, "if you don't use it, you'll lose it", applies here.... basically, writes lots of code.
