mobile site - now smart detected

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
We've had our mobile site available by special URL for almost a year now and a number of moderators have come to rely on it. That's plenty long that if there were problems, we'd know by now.

I'm happy to announce that the mobile site no longer requires a special URL. We are using detection to give you the right site. While we've tested it ourselves and it seems to work correctly, please post in this thread if that isn't the case.

If you just want to check out the mobile site and don't have a mobile device, it is still available by direct link. Or if you are on the mobile site and don't want it, there is a link at the bottom to switch back (you will have to do this each session though; post here if that is a problem and we will look at other solutions)

Logic
We are using the role that wireless devices that are not tablets get shown the mobile site by default. This means your BlackBerry and iPhone will see the mobile site, but your iPad will not.

Jeanne,

IE on Windows Phone 7 is not detected ... which is what I am using ... I get the regular home page. Which is fine ... hopefully you guys can add IE mobile ... the world is not all iPods ... (love the android devices too!)

I think you may be the only guy who has one of those

No, seriously, we'll check it out.

Keith,
Can you try it again?

I added this to the file:

It's more specific than I like which implies it will break at some point. If/when that happens, let us know here in the Ranch Office and we can update again.

And of course, the URL coderanch.com/mobile will continue to force the mobile view.

The detection is not active when entering through www.javaranch.com?

Oh, and the mobile page is rendered slightly too wide when using Opera Mini on Android (portrait mode at 320x480 pixel).

javaranch.com does not have a mobile site. When you click the forums link, it should work.

Is it possible to get a screenshot of that? I don't follow what you mean. (Or a camera taking a picture of the screen.)

I just meant I have to scroll horizontally, the content is not rendered to fit the width of the screen (like it is done in Android's stock browser). You can find a screenshot here. (Attachments don't work?)

Seems to be a change in behaviour with the latest Opera Mini update, some other sites had to adopt, too.
