IMHO, cloud computing is not a new technology. It is a new marketing brand on decades-old technology.

This was originally a response to another topic. I thought it wasn't all that pertinent to that topic, but would be an interesting discussion point on its own. So I split it off into its own topic for discussion.

Yeah, it is an old technologies with new name, or to be more precise the cloud enabling technologies are old (since 60s and virtualization technology exist) and virtualization can be considered a core tech for cloud.

Kinda agree on the "marketing brand" argument. There seems to be a lot of that going around lately -- terms that don't really clearly describe the technology. It has technology, and seem to describe it, but there is a lot of hand waving too.

Cloud computing, Web 2.0, and SaaS seems to fit this category. To a lesser extent, SOA and RIA seems to as well.

That's true Henry, and there are also many companies that were working in simple web apps for example, now naming themselves they are the first bla bla bla cloud solutions providers ...
and it is really difficult now to know who is really have a worth-money value and those who are just hypes and fakes.

Not to mention that SaaS is the same concept as ASP, but that term has fallen out of fashion during the dotcom crash.

Yeah, that's true Lester. but actually ASP didn't take a momentum like that SaaS took nowadays, but I think what helped the SaaS term is the high availability and service reliability we see now in applications that delivered as a service.
