advantages of javascript over other scripting languages ?

Their are many scripting languages are available today like vbscript, emscript etc. but why we prefer JavaScript or why not ?

No other language works across multiple browsers, so there really is no alternative in the browser.

While previous versions of the HTML specification support the use of ECMA scripting languages in general, the HTML5 proposed specification is all about JavaScript. This is one of the key points about HTML5 — there's a JavaScript API describing how every document element should behave in response to user actions and other events.

New HTML5 features such as the canvas, audio and video elements, as well as supporting HTML5 technologies such as local storage and geo-location, are rather useless without JavaScript.

So, it is essentially mandatory for those who are making HTML5-compliant browsers to support JavaScript. Supporting other scripting languages is optional.
