How did you lose $12,000 because of chess? Were you taken in by a chess hustler? Did you pay $12,000 for chess lessons? Or you were you just so focused on your chess that you forgot where you put the $12,000.

apparently professional poker dealers and players can wear out several packs of cards a day. Not as bad as other 'pack a day' habits but wonder.

I lost 12,000$ since i was not doing the things which is required to be done(Job) all other things came into picture from paying house rent ,all my saved money is gone

What's an "FM title" ? When I hear "IM" I think international master...

I have a similar addiction, to Go. But I limit myself to 1 or 2 games / day. (If I focus hard on one or two games I don't have any of the appropriate brain chemicals left to play well after that.)

Bert FM are below IM,like NM with different ratings with respect to USCF ,Normally you get NM(National Master) from 2200 rating.(Different Titles)

I remember the USCF system from when I played chess. (I was a "B" player.) And, indeed, a USCF master had a rating of 2200+.

Since I've become a Go player I've often wondered how Go ratings might correlate to chess ratings... My really crude idea is that a USCF master is about the same as an AGA (American Go Assoc.), 3dan or 4dan... I'm somewhere in that 3dan - 4dan range so I guess it's about the same as a USCF master.

In Go, the ranking systems are similar throughout the world but the ratings aren't equal. A 3dan in Europe is much stronger than a 3dan in the US, who is stronger than a 3dan in Japan, but none of them are as strong as a 3dan in Korea.

The closest Go has come to a universal rating is on the more popular international Go servers. I usually play on the IGS server and their ratings are "tougher" than most real-life ratings. A 3dan on IGS is WAY stronger than a 3dan AGA.

In any case, congrats on achieving a master rating, that's a fine accomplishment.

Does anyone know how many chess *professionals* there are? In other words, you can be a master and not make your living from chess. How many players are able to make a living from chess?

Even the few that can make a living by playing chess don't last forever. Grandmasters seem to burn out after awhile, just like professional athletes. Bobby Fischer, chess's brightest star of the 20th century, flamed out more spectacularly than most. He is now a raving lunatic, launching into tirades of hate-filled invective whenever anyone will listen, which fortunately isn't very often.

There are at least 500 professional Go players in the world. The top players can make seven figure incomes. Most of them seem to have economically comfortable lifestyles, and when they are past their peak in major tournaments it seems that they can do well as teachers.

From what I understand it seems a bit more humane then the life of the typical chess master.
