This question may seem vague, but for what kind of applications is Android best suited?

Applications that run on mobile devices

Joking aside, it breaks down to "mobile" and "device". Mobile: what would you want or need on the go? Device: What works on a small display (for phones - tablet displays can be larger), is fine with limited text entry, does not eat CPU and power for lunch and doesn't need large amounts of data to work with. Also, thinking positively instead of negatively: what can make use of a camera and/or GPS?

I would actually say mobile device is too limiting since Android is making great strides in the sensor market, TV's, etc. One might say resource constrained platforms.

Well, the question was about what apps are best suited for Android, and I stand by my tongue-in-cheek "apps for mobile devices". Android may run elsewhere -it's a Linux distro, after all, and can be adapted-, but that's not where it shines or where exciting apps will appear in great numbers. It'd be a bit like saying "Java ME even runs on Blu-Ray players" - yes, it does, but that's not what one gets into Java ME for.

Well we can disagree but android its much closer to the idea of oak/java then java ended up being. Also making the comparison between java me/Android is not analogous at all and the simple fact is android is being used for a large number of consumer devices and its a wonderful fit. Trying to do the same with java me is more or less a non sequitur
