Why did Java categorize the Exception into Checked and Unchecked Exceptions?

What is the advantage of forcing the developer to handle the exception at compile time as in the case of Checked Exception?

And also new frameworks like Spring,Hibernate etc. support Unchecked Exceptions Why is it so?

Any help will be highly appreciated...
