Importance of testing WAS 6.1 application in different Operating Systems
posted 6 years ago
We have a Serlvet-based application which we license and require our customers to run in either WAS 6.1 or 7
Many customers have a different OS than we do (our OS is Solaris 10). While we would support our application if a customer had an OS-specific issue, we do not test in their specific OS up front. This has never been a problem for us.
But now we have a prospect who already uses Websphere in a Red Hat Enterrprise Linux OS. They were inquiring whether we would test our application in RHEL upfront. For various reasons its not quick or easy for us to do this.
Just wondering if anyone would opine in general the importance of OS differences for a Servlet application running in WAS 6.1 and 7.
In theory, I would say it doesn't matter because WebSphere is supposed to protect you from things like this. In practice, I have seen some types of behavior be different - in particular WebSphere APIs. The good news is that the problems crop up more on Solaris than on Red Hat so you will probably be ok.
