I downloaded this struts code and verified it works in my Tomcat 5.5 installation. However, the following source is error-flagged by IntelliJ

The Ide (Idea) complains that GetMessagesAction should be declared abstract because "it does not define actionPerformed(ActionEvent) in ActionListener.

Whats going on here? If this is in error shouldn't the application have failed compilation?

It looks like what may have happened is that intelliJ picked up the wrong Action class. Your Struts action class should extend org.apache.struts.action.Action, not javax.swing.Action.
