what is the default scope

If i dont mention the scope in <action-mappings> what would be the default scope?request? or session?

Just wanted to confirm whether its request or session.
Alert: I referred the book "Programming Jakarta Struts" by Chuck Cavaness and in this book the default scope is mentioned as session which is incorrect.
The default scope would always be request.
 
Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
