Certification track - SCJA and then SCJP, or just SCJP?

My new employer has generously offered an opportunity to pursue online Java training. In the coming months, I'll get into some Java programming. My background is in web development (Python, PHP, XSLT, XQuery, etc) but I've leveraged Java classes and methods through XSLT and XQuery and recently worked through about half of HFJ and The Java Tutorial.

The path I'm on is to take two courses in the next two months: an intro to the Java language (helps prepare for SCJA) and a followup course course (helps prepare for the SCJP). The course which prepares for SCJP has as a prerequisite SCJA certification or completion of their intro to java. I've got to start with the course which prepares for the SCJA.

Is it desirable to have both SCJA and SCJP (er.. OCJA and OCJP) certification? Since I've got to take the class which prepares for the SCJA I was wondering if I should take the SCJA or skip it.

Thanks!

Well, you could do the SCJA first because it's easier and will help you practice. The SCJP is TRICKY!

I don't think employers or whatever really look at the SCJA if you have the SCJP.... it's a lower version of the same stuff.

David, Welcome to JavaRanch
I would suggest SCJP is more than enough.
