Try to grab the ones by Khalid Mughal, K & B and Head First Java.

Write as many sample programs around common topics.

Do the exercises at the end of each chapter.

Once through with books (almost 70% topics), search for mock exams, certification dumps and participate in the forums to learn that extra bit.

You can also set a time frame for getting certified and purchase the voucher before hand (say 8-9 months). This will get you going.

Hi Saurabh,

Welcome to JR, I Would suggest you to start with ScjpFaq This link has solutions to all your queries.

As you are familiar with Java, I dont think its required to join any coaching institute for the same. For the book- You can use SCJP Guide by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates. Please note that SCJP is now referred as OCPJP.
