Anyone here play a flute ? I am considering doing some self-learning and ultimately getting myself to play a few notes in about 2 months

After researching this a little I understand a closed hole flute is easier to start with. Found some beginner's flutes on Amazon for about 100$

I am also planning to purchase a few books related to playing the flute. Any idea what I should look for when buying a new one ? Do enlighten me.

I play a Vietnamese bamboo flute (sáo trúc), but just for fun. $100 is amazingly cheap for a western flute, but it would be even better if you could borrow one, just to see if you can really get into it. It also shouldn't take months to learn to blow a few notes. Take a lesson if you can't get it in an hour or so. Otherwise you're just reinforcing bad habits. One bonus: you'll be able to produce a sound by "playing" coke bottles. One downside: you will do this with every bottle that comes into your hands.

Thanks for the advice.

Shops around my place do not rent flutes

I am pretty good at making a sound from plastic bottles The beginner lessons sound sensible. I got myself a cheap open hole (no pads) flute and it was so bad that I could not make a sound from it without tilting it at a 45 degree angle This is the reason I am opting for the closed hole version after reading a few users reviews.

My plan B now is to buy the western flute and read a book before giving it a try. I'll let you guys know how it went. Thanks

Try videos also. IMHO they are better than books. I dont know if there are many free vids for flute. Keyboard and guitar players can get plenty of vids online.

Good luck

PS : BTW what/who inspired you to play the flute ?

I spend a lot of time listening to melodies without accompanying words. This include songs from video games / movies / concerts etc. Every now and then I think to myself 'Hmm... this would be perfect if I can play it with a flute'.
