Beginning Android games - how suitable is/are the Android emulator(s)

I haven't yet ventured into Android development at all, but have developed in Java a long time. I know there is at least one Android emulator, but wondered how suitable the emulator is for real testing.

Additionally, considering the large range of form factors for real Android devices, is there a range of success when applications are transferred to real devices? Stated another way, does the emulator do a better job of emulating some devices than others - or perhaps I am mistaken and there are individual emulators for each device?

Sadly, the emulator is pretty much unuseable for testing any complex games. For games like Snake it will work OK, anything above that will not work very well.
