HTML display not as expected

and here's the display:

no video playing, no color, just the text appears.

The result that I expect is this
the browser window is divided into 2 divs (vertical stack) where each section occupies half of the browser's height (height=50%). the top is banner, while the bottom section is further divided to left and right div. left div is video, while right div is text. Anybody know where my mistake is? Thanks

remove <!doctype html> and try

Didn't work. It made things worse actually because now there seems to be a third div under the second div. I think the doctype is necessary to inform that this is an HTML document. But thanks anyway .

I as playing around with it, and when i added a wrapper div around it, and set a height to that, then the banner and what not filled 50% of that set height.

I believe you need to set an outer container height and then the heights are based off of that value.

You need to set the height of the html,body
