JSP & Servlets : How do detect THE MAIN cause of error ?

There are so many possible sources of error : web.xml, servlet, jsp etc. How do i know where exactly the error(s) lie ? Can that be done by using an IDE (i am not using one now) ?
Is there any tool which shows the sequence of events which caused the errors ?

PS : Servlet code looks simple, but its so frustrating to find the errors. Is it really "difficult" or is it just me ?

The stack trace or HTTP response will tell you.

How to see the stack trace ? any tools that do all this from one UI ?

It will be in the server log. You can view these from eclipse or any other IDE.
