Basic Clustering Question

Hello! First post here. I'm trying to hone my Tomcat skills, so I decided to play around with clustering and load balancing a bit.

I just set up Apache 2.2 with mod_jk as a load balancer to two Tomcat 6 servers. The Tomcat 6.0 docs say to set sticky_session to true for the load balancing worker. What's the point of session replication within the Tomcat cluster if the load balancer has to be configured for sticky sessions? Am I missing something?

I tested the setup using jforum, and the only way sessions work properly is if the load balancer is maintaining sticky sessions. Again, what's the point of the cluster (and session replication)? Couldn't I get the same result with two unclustered Tomcat instances?

Thanks again for indulging a novice!

All the best,
